Unhappy DVD/Cdrom mounting problem -- Toshiba/Mandrake9.0

I've been using this laptop about 4 years now, running Mandrake 9.0 on Toshiba satlite.
It came with a DVD/Cd-r, which I've been using fine till today. I didn't have any problems with watching DVDs, listening audio CDs, mounting data CDs, etc,

However, I can't listen to audio CDs nor mount data CDs today. But still can mount DVDs (and play DVDs).
This is really odd. I'm not sure what to do nor what is causing this. Any help is really appreciated.

My /etc/fstab looks like:
...
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,iocharset=iso8895-1,codepage=850,ro,umask=0 0 0
none /mnt/floopy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto
...

No other metion of /dev/cdrom nor /dev/dvd

I've tried with a data CD:

$mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: No medium found

$mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: No medium found

But if I try with a DVD:

$mount /mnt/cdrom
---> It works fine.

The Cdplayer doesn't even recognize that an audio cd is in the drive.

Thanks.

It looks like it could be a hardware problem
Can you boot from the drive. Put a cdrom (not a dvd, as dvd are working) that will boot and see if that will work. (just see if it works, i'm not say reinstall everything).
If that works, then it is looking like some sort of system error. Have you been playing around with the system as root? Did you a accidently delete something?

I'm not say you did. I'm just giving you areas to look at.

I've tried to boot from the CD and it wouldn't. It would just hang there till I take it out.

I was playing around with a ethernet card (PCMCIA).
So I was looking at my kernel congif and net config for a while.

I didn't delete anything and I was using the install CD to load something.

I'm not sure what has gone wrong or where to look.
