DVD/CD keep running

Im using suse 9.1 (64bit) on a athlon 2500+ 64bit 1gb ram, a8v mobo. I have a sony DVD RW+/- and a dynex dvd/cd player.
Sometimes both will continue to run LONG after I have accessed anything from them. Sometimes just because I have put a new DVD or CD in. I umount and they continue to run. Is this bad for my machine? Will it make it run hotter? Acutally, the noise is irritating. What can I do?
