Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

DVD automount fails with "CDROM not ready yet" and "unaligned transfer"

Recently my Kubuntu Jaunty installation has taken to not mounting previously OK DVDs. What I see upon insertion of a disc is the automount fail:

Nov 18 18:31:23 bjork kernel: [17654.552433] sr0: CDROM not ready yet.
Nov 18 18:31:25 bjork kernel: [17656.563408] sr0: CDROM not ready yet.
Nov 18 18:31:27 bjork kernel: [17658.594960] sr0: CDROM not ready yet.
Nov 18 18:31:29 bjork kernel: [17660.626754] sr0: CDROM not ready yet.
Nov 18 18:31:31 bjork kernel: [17662.659556] sr0: CDROM not ready yet.
Nov 18 18:31:33 bjork kernel: [17664.691350] sr0: CDROM not ready yet.
Nov 18 18:31:35 bjork kernel: [17666.295891] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] unaligned transfer
Nov 18 18:31:35 bjork kernel: [17666.295914] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] unaligned transfer
Nov 18 18:31:35 bjork kernel: [17666.295928] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] unaligned transfer
Nov 18 18:31:35 bjork kernel: [17666.295942] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] unaligned transfer
(repeated many times)

This persists across discs and across reboots.

I looked around the net and I at least found some evidence of the "unaligned transfer" problem; supposedly this happens when something tries to access the drive before it's ready, and (at least for some kernels) can get the responsible module in a permanently confused state. However, I'm not accessing the disc manually, some automounter or something is accessing it -- I don't even know what.

I'm using Kubuntu Jaunty with KDE 4.3.2. Kernel string from bootup:
Nov 18 13:37:33 bjork kernel: [ 0.000000] Linux version 2.6.28-14-generic (buildd@yellow) (gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) ) #47-
Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 01:19:55 UTC 2009 (Ubuntu 2.6.28-14.47-generic)

Any suggestions as to the cause or solution?

thanks,

eric

Most of the recent distros use HAL and DBUS to auto mount removable media. There is a way to disable it but since I generally do not like HAL and DBUS I don't build them into my working system unless I need a application that requires them, so I am not sure how you disable it. Have you had any problems with this disc drive before and how old is it? Its possible its starting to die, although I have had trouble with the sata dvd drives giving me io errors.
