duplex printing without a duplex printer attachment

hello there. I am running Kubuntu dapper and setting up my HP deskjet 5550 printer was a breeze with hplip drivers and cups. It works perfectly except when I try to do a double sided print job. I don't have the optional duplex attachment that attaches to the printer but in windows it worked nonetheless. In windows it would print just the odds then a pop-up window would appear. I would turn the papers over and load them into the paper tray then click continue and then it would print the even pages on the other sides of the sheets. Can this be done in Linux? When I click on duplex printing it just prints out all the pages but staggers them as if it thinks it is printing on the other side of the sheet. Thanks for the help.

Matt

Erm I was under the impression that to do that without the duplex attachment, you'd just tell it to print page 1 of the job, then put the paper back in though the manual feed and tell it to print page 2 of the job. If you wanted to do the same as you mentioned with windows you'd probably have to tell it too print the odd number series i.e. in the print options dialogue box of whatever you're using to print - that'd be obtained through the file>print facility of most apps (e.g. Open office etc).

Or have I just completely missed what you're asking ???

regards

John

p.s. erm whenever I've tried to do something similar I have to put "comma seperated values" in the pages box - 1,3,5,7,9 etc etc then when thats done, turn "it" all over and tell it to print 2,4,6,8, etc etc.
