Dumb 64 bit question!

You have been warned in advance that this is a dumb question. My box is a sempron 2800 w/1 gig DDR 3200. Is this a 64 bit system? Writing this from Kanotix64 liveCD, so it looks like it is. Or will a 64 bit OS run in a 32 bit environment? My installed distro is PCLinuxOS, which I am happy with, but I am always looking for a little more speed. Is there an available 64 bit OS which is as well thought of as PCLinuxOS?
Thanx for reading dumb question.

I'm not going to compare it to PCLinuxOS which I know nothing about, but my primary use system is Debian AMD64. Very stable and good software selection. I don't think you'll find it obviously faster, but my experience has been that it's slightly faster, and generally works better because a lot of code was revisited during the 32-64 bit conversion effort.

No Wine, Flash, Mozilla Java plugin. If you can live without those, or set them up in a 32-bit chroot, you'll do well there.

Konqueror doesn't need the java plugin, and there is an "experimental" OpenOffice that works well for me.
