Dual screen scientific linux issue

hello guys,

I am running scientific linux and I am trying to get my dual screen to work.

I had a graphics card fixed on my motherboard and now I got this one:
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV370 [Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series]

I put it on and it seems to work with no further effort but the screens are not well aligned. At the main one the image is a little bigger(I miss a few pixels from the right) and at the secondary the screen starts 2-3 cm on the right leaving a black gap at my screen.

I hope I explained this clearly.

My screens are an EIZO Flex Scan L767 19 inch (primary) and a SamsungGH19PS model 940T S (secondary).

Is there a way I can adjust this?

What driver do you use? radeon or fglrx?

There are options in the xorg.conf or in the proprietary aticonfig ...

Hello again!
I am having one build-in graphics controller that was on the mother board and I can not get rid of, and the new one I got.

The lspci -v | less command gives me this:

VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV370 [Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 3000
Physical Slot: 1
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 30
Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
I/O ports at 1100 [size=256]
Memory at f0100000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at f0120000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: radeon
Kernel modules: radeon, radeonfb

Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV370 [Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series] (Secondary)
Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 3001
Physical Slot: 1
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
Memory at f0110000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=64K]
Capabilities: <access denied>

It seems I have Radeon. Can you give me a how to if it exists? Or anything that would give me some directions? I would hate to mess up with xorg configuration.

Thanks allot!

I also tried to run
Code:
sudo Xorg :1 -configure
And the outcome was pretty interesting. I am fairly new to this but I can understand that I haven't configured my screens well.

Also I checked about pixman and it seems there are newer versions as well I have 0.26.2 and here http://cairographics.org/releases/ I found pixman 0.30.0. Could that have anything to do with my issue?

Hello nefie.
Well if it worked before with the old pixman ... You can try to upgrade - if it doesn't pull too many dependencies you should be able to downgrade again.
What was your old card? Nvidia? Maybe you can still find some old Xorg logs in /var/log/ that may give us a hint what was different.

Xorg -configure will change your xorg.conf. What does it look like in /etc/X11/?

Thank you very much äxl but this is a fresh install it did not work ever before. I will try to upgrade pixman

Those are the contents of the /etc/X11/ file.

applnk fontpath.d mwm prefdm xdm xinit Xmodmap xorg.conf.d Xresources

In my var/log/ file there are some xorg log files

Xorg.0.log, Xorg.0.log.old, Xorg.1.log, Xorg.1.log.old, Xorg.2.log, Xorg.2.log.old, Xorg.9.log,Xorg.9.log.old

I opened the Xorg.0.log.old file and here are some of its contents that I thought would be useful. The build date is February so it must be old enough to use the old graphics card

Should I post something more? Or maybe open the case and check the build-in graphics card that it was using before? Should I check some other logs?

One more text log file in your /home/ or $USER directory.

Code:
.xsession-errors

Config file is saying you have 4 screens but actually only two, thats an issue. Remove two and post the xorg.conf.new. Lets check that one out.

Thank you very much for pointing this one out.

I am just having trouble understanding which one I should remove. And how I should remove it. Googling this did not help very much.

Also the command Xorg -configure has this outcome:
Quote:
[user@pc X11]$ sudo Xorg -configure

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Please consult the Red Hat, Inc. support
at https://www.redhat.com/apps/support/
for help.

Should I try it when the xorg is not running, like at start-up?

Okay, for one, I don't understand why the configuration says "built-in" on all your device. What card is the onboard?

Execute lspci - will show all devices and BusID.

Will help you create xorg.conf file. We need refresh rates for your monitors. Do some Research on their horizsync and vertrefresh rates.

Question: does the ati card support dual screen? And if it does, can't you disable the built-in card on bios? It is a lot easier if we can just use one card.

I actually just added an adapter and changed the cable of the second screen from DVI to VGA, so it works ok!! (I don't believe I didn't think of that before).

But the think is that I do want to have a properly configured card and get rid of the extra card so I will try to find a way to disable the build-in one.

Yew my ati supports dual screen but i did not disabled the build-in yet because I didn't know how to.

My optical devices are:

20:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV370 [Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series]
20:00.1 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV370 [Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series] (Secondary)

Hi you can find .xsession-errors in the root of your home folder.

for most users this is you base home directory ($USER is the regex for current user, or a user)

the easiest way to view the file is ...
Code:
less ~/.xsession-errors
type q at anytime to quit less.

hope this helps, these guys know more about this than me.

Regards Glenn

Reboot pc and get into bios setup. That's where you will see the option to disable built-in devices.
