Dual OS. again?
Hello everybody,
I know this is repeated million times. I thought it would be an easy task, i know it is once i am in the right direction. I have installed linux mandrake 10.1 on a HDD and WinXP on another HDD. where the WinXP HDD is set to master and the Linux is the slave. " what a shame!" anyways, I would be grateful if someone could give me link to a thread in this website, i know there is one out there, that has everything listed in it. i searched a lot but couldn't find one or maybe i just didn't understand it. i don't know what is Lilo and whether i am using it or not! thanks in Advance. Ahmed. |
Two questions:
1. Did you install Lilo to the MBR or not when you install Mandrake? 2. What's happening now when you boot up? |
thanks aysiu for the quick reply,
1) I don't know what is Lilo or what it does! and i don't know if i installed it or not. is there anyway i can check if i did? where can i find it? 2) when i boot up it takes me directly to WinXP. no menus or anything else. Ahmed |
If you installed Linux first and then XP, you have trouble because XP probably wiped out the bootloader (either GRUB or LiLo). Always install windows first. You will have to re-install Lilo or Grub, to get it working. Search this forum on how to install Lilo or grub and also how to edit it. Also search www.google.com .

i am sorry, i sould have made this clear.
I had Win Xp installed long time ago, few days ago i bought a new HDD and disconnected the HDD that contains WinXP then installed Mandrake on the new HDD. i'll go ahead and look for Lilo, by the way what is better ? Lilo or GRUB? |

Lilo is probably on the second hard drive. Try searching for "move boot loader" or "move lilo" or "reinstall lilo".
I have lilo installed on my system. When I do "dir /etc" I see no reference to grub. What do you see? |
