Dual Monitors VGA + DVI (HDMI) Lenovo T410 in docking st - DVI no output???
Hi all,
Linux Mint 14.1 64 Bit (dual boot with Win7 Ultimate 64) on Lenovo T410 in docking station series 3.
I've done some googling and so forth and searching here but can find no posts the same as this problem.
I've got two monitors connected to my docking station series 3, and Lenovo T410. One is connected to VGA (an older monitor) and the other to DVI. The VGA connected monitor works fine but the DVI one does not. According to the Display Settings - both are connected and are working fine - but there's nothing happening on the 2nd monitor (a Dell U2310H or whatever) connected DVI.
Now the DELL monitor is switched on, connected fine, and set to read the DVI input - and it works fine on the Windows 7 OS. But here I get nothing! The Dell monitor goes to sleep (it says - no signal is coming from your computer)?????
See output from "xrandr --verbose" BELOW:

So I had a look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf - and it's not populated by anything.
So I dunno - is there something wrong with the cable i.e. does Linux's signal not quite making it through to the Dell monitor through DVI? Do I need a driver for my Dell monitor?
So of the below - copied from your xorg.conf - you have Monitor0 and Screen0 as separate monitors? I'm a bit confused - the only editing of xorg.conf is in virtual Linux machines and just adding a Display mode.
Don't you need Monitor0 and Monitor1? Or does Monitor0 and Screen0 work?
My two monitors are a BenQ also on VGA1 at 1440x900+0+180 and HDMI3 at 1920x1080+1440+0
I'm not sure where to put these? The VGA1 is left and HDMI3 right
Would it be sufficient to just have an xorg.conf with:
The meta-mode line and cinerama and twinview maybe will change the look, dual desktop or 1 desktop across 2 monitors.
I'm using the "nvidia-auto-select" from the nVidia driver module, but it really only contains stuff about antialias, fsaa, aniso etc.
don't change the hardware descriptors (HDMI3) on my sys, yours is working so they should be right.

maybe,
One thing to remember is that most of the time you'll have 2 files after you edit and save the first, the old file is renamed with a (tilda) ~ on the end. Handy for switching back to a config that works, when a new config fails, leaving you a cli, no gui.

# 2 mon, 1 screen across 2 monitors of different type with twinview.
#Configuring TwinView
#
#The TwinView feature is only supported on NVIDIA GPUs that support dual-display functionality, such as the GeForce2 MX, GeForce2 Go, Quadro2 MXR, Quadro2 Go, and any of the GeForce4, Quadro4, GeForce FX, or Quadro FX GPUs. Please consult with your video card vendor to confirm that TwinView is supported on your card.
#
#TwinView is a mode of operation where two display devices (digital flat panels, CRTs, and TVs) can display the contents of a single X screen in any arbitrary configuration. This method of multiple monitor use has several distinct advantages over other techniques (such as Xinerama):
#
# A single X screen is used. The NVIDIA driver conceals all information about multiple display devices from the X server; as far as X is concerned, there is only one screen.
#
# Both display devices share one frame buffer. Thus, all the functionality present on a single display (e.g., accelerated OpenGL) is available with TwinView.
#
# No additional overhead is needed to emulate having a single desktop.

Hi, the following didn't work as a xorg.conf. X immediately failed to start. By deleting it (Mint wasn't using a xorg.conf before I introduced it) I was able to start X.
I'm a bit in the dark here. Logically I would have thought, there should be two "monitor" sections - Monitor0 and Monitor1 for instance, VGA2 and HDMI 3with their respective modes "1440x900" and "1920x1080" or whatever they should be. Can I just add (or remind) that Mint's own GUI settings for Displays detects the DVI monitor and assumes it is on and output the right position and resolution and in fact the desktop does extend to the DVI monitor, but "the lights are on but nobody's home" - well there are no lights either.
