Dual Monitor Setup
 
I've searched for similar threads, but I haven't been able to find anything with problems similar to mine (if anyone else does, please provide a link).

I have recently installed a win 2k/Debian (testing) dual boot on this machine and all seems to be going well. However enabling a dual screen set up is proving difficult.

I am trying to enable a dual head setup which will give me a large single desktop. At the moment I have got a variation of this. The cursor moves between the two screens with the desired behaviour and windows can be moved between the screens. However the second monitor does not display the windows. Rather, it displays a clone of the first screen with everything except the cursor (which is behaving normally).

The graphics card in question is an ATI 9600xt, with a DVI output and a VGA output.

I have attempted to use the Ati driver and fglrxconfig tool to generate and XF86Config-4 file. This file works as described above with some tweaking (and not at all without the tweaking).

Well if you have something on both screens you are getting close.
I think you just need to add the Xinerama extension, which will add support for the two screen desktop.
Take a look at my config file under "ServerLayout" Should look something like mine.

My ServerLayout section now pretty much looks exactly like yours now (relevant names changed of course). Unfortunately, nothing seems to have changed upon restart of the X server.

Is anything you are doing making a difference? I'm wondering if you are saving the file as the correct name. Its a little confusing since the XF86 to Xorg changes. Perhaps try saving it as both XF86config and xorg.conf . You can also tell x which file to use when starting x -- try something like "startx xorg.test" from the command prompt.

Also are really restarting the xserver? If you are in graphical mode when trying all of this you must do a "cntl-alt-backspace" to restart x, simply logging out will not do it in some distros. It's a little dangerous to do this from graphical mode anyway. You should drop back to text-only to do all this experimenting. Do that as follows. Logout; hit cntl-alt-f3 (or some other f button) until you get an alternate login prompt; log in as root; From there type $ init 3, which should kick you out of graphical mode and into text mode. Now you can start x with the startx command - this will also tell you a lot more about what's going on.
Don't forget to save the current X config file as something you can remember in case you get in trouble.

Yeah, I'm pretty much already doing what you are saying.

And I know my changes are being effected because of the number of times a change stops the whole thing working.

I'll post if anything interesting comes up when I run startx, but as I recall it isn't very informative.

Well, in our configs, we have two Section "Device" profiles, whereas you only have one. I'm not saying you necessarily require two, but it might be something worth trying.

The "Screen 0" and "Screen 1" parts tell the NVIDIA card which display head to use, otherwise you're using the same one twice.
The Readme that comes with the NVIDIA drivers is very helpful, but quite long, spend some time with that.

Thx, I didnt think I needed two device sections since its calling the same card twice. But I put it in and it works now.

Right, I think my issue is with Xinerama, as basically it isn't implementing properly and my XF86Config-4 configuration really does look like it should work.

If I disable Xinerama, it brings me back to a desktop that would only span one monitor, but the mouse still moves between the two monitors with normal behaviour. The second monitor still clones the first and the cursor cannot manipulate the objects in the second monitor, only in the first.

I really can't find this problem reproduced anywhere during my extensive searching. Anybody got any ideas? I'm getting rather desperate.

I wonder if you can switch to the latest Xorg implemetation. That statement on the top of your config file that says debian has messed with the XF86 kind of worries me.
