Dual Head, question before I install Linux

OK I recently purchased two 19" samsung monitors and was thinking about dual booting Linux/XP. I have a few video cards I could use ATI or Nvidia, both have DVI/VGA out. My question is this, in XP I can run true widescreen desktop with a resolution of 2560x1024 with no problems, full acceleration.

If I install Ubuntu or FC3 will I be able to go full widescreen with either of these cards and the graphics be accelerated. I have been doing some google research on the topic and it seems there are alot of people complaining about things popping in the middle of the two monitors like the login screen, or games, or apps. Also it seems that the ATI cards have way more problem with the dual head setup, is that correct ? From what I read the second monitor just wants to mirror the first instead of spreading across both screens.

you can use nvidia cards to do that with twinview (as opposed to xinerama) and it will work, I've had trouble with sdl apps showing up between monitors, but that's it, everything else goes fine.

I think that with their latest drivers nvidia has improved support for acceleration with xinerama.. but I haven't tried it..

ati generally has provided inferior linux support compared to nvidia.
