You have a modem that is USB on the lan side and runs PPPOE. Linux does do both, but getting the usb modem to detect properly may be an issue.
If you have the option of requesting an RJ-45(ethernet) DSL modem from your ISP(as most people do), I recommend you do that. It's not worth the headache if it doesn't configure at go.
The modem you have stands the best chance of working on the newest distributions, such as redhat or mandrake, etc. The modem you have also has plenty of problems working in windows as well.
The ISP doesn't care if they have to send you a RJ-45 or USB modem.. they just send the usb one because most people are too stupid to configure a network card. So, give the OS install a shot, and if things get spooky, get a standards based modem. Good luck.
