Did you get any errors, any messages at all? Have you tried running the cups installation to see if the driver actually installed?

Thats intriguing because my z600 installion was a .sh rather than an rpm, I will investigate the z600 rpm as it will probably be much easier to tell if it installed properly

I correctly figured it out, however, trying to install the cups driver with yast gave my about 10 dependency issues. Mostly pertaining to how I need cup >= 1.1. I did a check and have cups 1.2 installed. Would you su ggest ignoring the dependency issues, or is there a way of tricking the system into thinking i have 1.1?

Did the driver come with any type of readme or faq? You could try symlinking the cups packages, but that might break them.

The driver came w/ a readme that basically said rpm -ivh the 2 rpms. I was thinking symlinking the cups packages, but I'm not sure what to symlink it too, since when I did a kde file search for cups I got about 30 hits. The one thing I was htinking is that I have a cups1.2.0..... on my system, and I would symlink it in the same place to a cups1.1.8.... which is what the requirment says. Does that make sense?

You might want to uninstall the packages and try the packages at lexmark, following the guide I linked to above.

I have uninstalled the packages and reinstalled them. The z600 drivers now appear in my printer driver list. However, I don't even get any noise or status change out of my printer when I try running it. I'm going back through the whole process again, but I'm not sure how much good it will do.

Did you follow the guide as far building the cups sample driver? Where did you find the info about the drivers being usable for the dell printer?

I found the information about the drivers being compatible along time ago, but I know that the only difference between the Dell a940 and the lexmark z600 is that the Dell takes different shaped ink cartridges. My understanding is the actual hardware is identical. I think I followed the guid correctly, but I s uppose it couldn't hurt to go back and check again. Just a little frustrated at this point...

I know it can be frustrating. Have you contacted dell to ask the question"Where are my printer drivers for my linux os?"? Not that they would have them, but, if the request comes often enough, maybe they will in the future.

Having the same issues AND asked Dell about Linux drivers. Their reply was that they advised me to use Windows... :(

Its bullcrap isn't it, since I know Dell actually sells things w/ linux on it. I've been very dissappointed on the wh ole with dell recently, so I know for next time...

Well, they said (and it's true) that their website states that the A940 is only supported for W2K and XP. Thing is that I wasn't aware I was buying a Lexmark with a different brand name stuck to it. If I'
d known (maybe I should have checked further), I wouldn't have bought it, as I've had not so good experiences with Lexmark in the past.

In all honesty though, the A940 does perform nicely, and I've had no problems with it - as long as you use it under XP that is :(
