Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Drive errors - hardware or software?

Hi,

I recent got back from a short break to find my server was unable to access its main data drive (which as luck would have it I hadn't back up in an age <kicks self again>). I am 99% certain that its a hardware failure but I would like a second opinion. I managed to get the drive going again (and backed it up ) but it keeps conking out and seems to have particular problems with DMA mode.

The drive is a Maxtor 6Y120L0 120GB 7200RPM INT EIDE ATA/133 HARD DRIVE and is about 15 months old although is has only been running about 3 or 4 of those.

I am running Debain testing with kernel 2.6.5-1-386

hdparam /dev/hdb gives

multcount = 0 (off)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 65535/16/63, sectors = 240121728, start = 0

Sample error messages from syslog are below (I think that I have grabbed about one of each type - there are hundreds of repeats). This morning was the first time I got any "{ UncorrectableError }" error messages and so I think it is probably now terminal.

Thanks for your help.

If you want to be sure, download maxtor's dignostic utilities from their website and put the drive through it's paces. Maxtor's tech support will ask you to do that before giving you an rma .
