DRI with S3/VIA ProSavageDDR

I am having a problem getting direct rendering to
work with my video chipset. Any guesses hints
or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I enable dri in my XF86Config file
Load "GLcore"
Load "glx"
Load "dri"

I have agp compiled and loaded as a module
I have the DRM module for my card loaded
lsmod
Module Used by Not Tainted
savage 1
agpgart 3

card0 device exists and is reported
as being successfully opened in X's log
drmOpenDevice: open result is 6, {OK}

XFree86.0.log reports
(II) SAVAGE(0): Direct Rendering Enabled

When I run glxinfo I get
Direct Rendering: No

running glxgears confirms I'm getting terrible speed

System info:
ProSavageDDR w/ 32MB shared video memory
Resolution: 1280x1024. 1024x768

RH7.3
Kernels
2.4.18-3 (Redhat's)
2.4.22-rc1-ac1
X 4.2
