Dreaded "Out of Range" error on Viewsonic VG171b w/ATI RADEON 9100

I'm stumped. Trying to use my Viewsonic VG171b LCD connected w/DVI on a used system I just bought (2.6.32-25-generic, Ubuntu) and am just getting the dreaded "Out of Range" error on the monitor no matter what I try. Have read up on this extensively and tried many things, but have yet to get the monitor to work with Xorg in any video mode at all!

Frustrated beyond belief. Have been working on this for two days and never once have I gotten anything but Out of Range. Monitor worked fine on my older SuSE system.

Xorg.log reports the video card as "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 9100 IGP rev 0".

Driver is reported as:

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so
(II) Module radeon: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.7.6, module version = 6.13.0
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 6.0

which is recent (this is only a 6-month-old system).

The Xorg.conf is just the vanilla auto-generated -configure output; Monitor section reads:

Section "Monitor"
#DisplaySize 340 270 # mm
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "VSC"
ModelName "VG171b"
HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

which seems right.

The monitor identifies itselfs as 1280x1024 @ 60Hz (64kHz horizontal).

No matter I try, I always just get Out of Range. I tried manually adding various ModeLines based on the information in Xorg.0.log

Specifically, I made a ModeLine based on the detailed timing:

Modeline "1280x1024" 108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066

Out of Range.

I tried a ModeLine based on "cvt -v 1280 1024 60":

Modeline "1280x1024" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync

Out of Range.

I copied the ModeLine from the previous system this monitor worked fine on:

Modeline "1280x1024" 121.35 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1064

Out of Range.

I do notice that 1280x1024@60Hz is not listed as an established timing in Xorg.0.log, but trying 75Hz (which was listed)-- or anything else on the list-- didn't work either.

The only errors I see in the log are:

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
(EE) RADEON(0): Unable to write to DVO Slave 112.

Am using the system now on a different LCD; no problems with that one. But the VG171b is not flying.

Can anyone help?? I'm stumped. Aaarrrggghhh!!!

The xorg.conf is vanilla and boring, so I'm not including it here (except for the Monitor section above). Here is the entire Xorg.0.log from one of the failed tries:

A few things: Glad to see you have a HorizSync and VertRefresh setting. I presume you are sure of those values?
Have you the kernel module loaded? I have these in rc.local
/sbin/modprobe -i radeon #kernel module
/usr/bin/setfont ter-k28n #sets a font I can read.

It's disabling DRI. Radeon support is sensitive to your versions of mesa, xorg-server, libdrm, pixman, xf86-video-ati, and a host of dependencies. Good to mention those, and your distro.

Lastly, amd developers hang out on phoronix forums.
http://www.p0horonix.com
Bugs exist aplenty - either in mesa, xf86-video-ati, or xorg-server, and a search for bugs isn't a bad idea.

Hi BK... thanks for the reply.

I spent another day struggling with this and got nowhere.

Yes. They agree with what the monitor reports of itself, and what worked on the previous system. Those are pretty wide ranges!

When loaded, the radeon module immediately switches video modes to the highest resolution/best, which causes the problem. Same behavior whether I load it by hand, or when it loads as X starts. So, can't put this in rc.local or can't even use the system in text/console mode (which is how I like to start off).

This system works fine with a different monitor connected (to VGA-0), which is what I'm using right now. Loading the radeon module does the same thing then: switches to the highest resolution/best mode, which works fine on that (smaller) monitor. It's just driving the VG171b (on DVI-0) that's trouble.

Can't figure out why DRI is being disabled. Did lots of searching/reading, but got nowhere. Made sure KMS is enabled by putting "options radeon modeset=1" in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf (AND added it as the GRUB kernel boot option "radeon.modeset=1") but made no difference.

Updated to the latest of everything:

libgl1-mesa-dev 7.7.1-1ubuntu3
xserver-org 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.3
libpixman-1-dev 0.16.4-1ubuntu2
xserver-org-video-ati 1:6.13.0-1ubuntu5

Made no difference. Built a new Xorg 1.7.6 from source but it was a flop: it couldn't even -configure, said it couldn't find the output drivers (which obviously WERE there, the original Xorg had no problem finding them). So, punted on that.

I did some searching there-- searched every damn place. Didn't find anything to crack this.

Am stumped as to what to try next.

Are you still using 2.6.32? That's an awfully old kernel to try KMS on. Have you tried disabling KMS entirely?

Hi Adam-- Yes, that's the kernel that came with the box. I'm way out in the sticks on dialup so try to avoid giant downloads, especially since I get cut off after 4 hours of connect time, so whatever I'm pulling has to be completed in that time.

I disabled KMS and removed the xorg.conf (which was vanilla -configure) and there's no more DRI problem, but the end result is the same: Out of Range.

Attached is the latest Xorg.log.0 with KMS disabled. Only problem of note is: "(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols." I'll try to clear that up and try again. Meanwhile, here's the latest full log:

OK, I'm up and running. After looking into the GLX problem, I found the system had a half-assed mixture of fglrx and xorg code. Wonder why this even worked at all??? Anyway, wiped fglrx, re-installed xserver-xorg-video-radeon, rebooted and it came up perfectly. Sorry for wasting everyone's time! --ian
