I have glibc 2.3.2, and the "control panel" works Ok.

Well, there's no fireglconfig in /usr/X11R6/bin, so I'm kind of at a loss.

I got the RPM, I didn't see a source tar there. Of course, I'm not known for my keen eyesight. <looks again>

It should be under /usr/src/ there should be two .tar.gz files (one is the drivers and the other is the panel). If you have X4.3 then the driver & panel should be glibc 2.3 compliant
