Do your SATA disks make a "tack" noise at shutdown?

Mine does! And I guess it's not unusual:

http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-ke...msg158222.html

And seems like it could damage the disk in a long term basis. How to fix it? They say kernel 2.6.22 will solve it, but I don't want to continue damaging them... does anybody know how to fix this now by changing something in shutdown? I'm running gentoo.

This could be useful: http://linux-ata.org/shutdown.html

Thanks.

I'm not going to loose any sleep over this. To me it is completely trivial.

You could avoid having this terrible wear on your disks by keeping your computer running and having it run some useful software such as a BOINC project.

I could, but currently my power source is kind of dying, and I'm trying to halt the machine everytime I can, unitl I make some time (and money :P) to buy a new one.

If you never turn your computer off, yeah, maybe it's not a problem... but I do, and I don't like to wear down my disks!

I can appreciate your point of view. I still think that this particular problem is not going to cause your disks to break. I think you are more likely to have a spindle bearing or controller logic board go bad first. It depends on the brand of disks though. Some brands are better than others.

I'm just worried because I don't know much about the mechanics inside the drive (just the basic stuff)... and since it's called "emergency park" I don't think it's designed to stand everyday use (and it does hell of a noise! :P)

It is best to tell the hard drive that the computer or the power is going off for a while than just shutting down the computer with out telling the hard drive. Do not be paranoid.

It is best to leave a hard drive on instead of putting it in stand-by. Either fully on or fully off is good states for hard drives, but not half off or half on.

If you are going to use a computer for an hour and then shutting it off. That is a waste of power and the life span of mechanical parts will be shorten.

Power supplies are like hard drives too. The capacitors gets hot from surrounding parts and the amount of amperage they are filtering. It is best to replace power supplies every year or two depending on the quality of the unit.

Well, luckily it's solved now in kernel 2.6.21-gentoo-r2 (more info in https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=174373).

It's working just fine now, my disks rest down on shutdown
