Question Do UVC (USB Video Class) webcams automatically work in GNU/Linux?

Hello,

As far as I know, there are many USB webcams that has out-of-the-box, plug-and-play support by the Linux kernel, even though these webcams do not specifically state Linux support.

However, may USB webcams do say they support the UVC (USB Video Class) standard (even if they don't say they support Linux). If so, can I resonably assume that UVC webcams will automatically work under a GNU/Linux distribution?

For example, the Logitech C920s says it "works in USB Video Device Class (UVC) mode", but doesn't say anything about Linux support.

BTW, the oldest Linux kernel I'm running is 4.18.

Thanks!

https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.p...Webcam_Devices this place tends to have pretty solid information.

Scientific linux may be a bit more difficult as support for audio video wasn't their main concern.

More information. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam

Thanks for the links! I see that the Ubuntu page specifically says that UVC devices are supported by the kernel. As for Scientific Linux, it is just one of several distributions I'm running, and it is the one with the oldest kernel. However, I'll probably not use my webcam with the Scientific Linux system so hopefully it'll be fine.

If anyone else can confirm that UVC webcams should automatically work with GNU/Linux that would be appreciated, too!
