I'm not sure your will gain anything from paritioning the drive, but you will have to anyway. Ubuntu will not allow you to write data to an unformatted drive. It will need to have at least one partition on it. http://ubuntuforum.webs.com/harddiskpartition.htm

There is a difference between an unformatted and an unpartitioned disk. If you add a formatted, but not partitioned disk to /etc/fstab Ubuntu will have absolutely no problem with that. By the way, the OP is using CentOS, not Ubuntu.
