What is the stated speed rating on the USB key?

If you want to know if USB 2 is working type:

lsusb -v | grep ehci

And see if anything comes out.

If you draw a blank type:

lspci

And see if a USB 2 interface is reported.

my usb pen is labeled 2.0

the first command gave me nothing, but lspci gave me, among other stuff, this:
Code:
0000:00:11.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 1b)
so...no USB 2.0 for me? how do I upgrade it? btw, this is on my SuSE 9.2 box...

How do you upgrade it? New computer! Unless I am very much mistaken you have plain old USB 1.1 hardware in your machine and that's the end of it.

If this is a desktop you can just buy a PCI adaptor for it for about 20 pounds (or 30 dollars or 30 euros or 3 goats and a chicken depending where you are located).

Your OS will support USB 2, no worries, but your memory key may still be slow because flash memory is just not fast. Sorry.
