Do hard drives last longer when they're horizontal?

I heard somewhere that hard drives last longer if they're horizontal. I can (sort of) see how keeping a hardrive on its side would put a little bit of gravitational strain on the heads, but surely that dosen't noticeably affect the drive's life, does it? I always wanted to get to the bottom of this.

I am thinking about running Linux on a Playstation 2 and need to know whether to keep it horizontal or vertical, if you were wondering why I asked.

That's not true with today's hard drives. That was the case many many years ago.
