DMA activation on ATAPI DVD/CD + RW

I'm trying to turn on dma on my dvd/cd combo drive that is registered as /dev/hdc and I get the following error.
Code:
bash-2.05# hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc

 setting_using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
Copying/ripping cd's takes forever, 45+min for a 1/2 full cd, so It's clearly not on, and I don't know how else to get it on.

Thx.

This is my kernel configuration for DMA

ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support --->[*] Generic PCI bus-master DMA support
[ ] Force enable legacy 2.0.X hosts to use DMA[*] Use PCI DMA by default when available
[ ] Enable DMA only for disks

It occured to me that I really should paste the output from hdparm -tT /dev/hdc
so, here it is
Code:
Ryan ryan # hdparm -tT /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
read() failed: Input/output error
 Timing buffered disk reads: read() failed: Input/output error

I read somewhere that DMA does not apply to ATAPI, its seems to me that perhaps that the drive is being used under IDE drivers and the device needs ATA drivers? I have the same problem I activated the correct drivers and everything but problem not solved.
