DLT Backup device in DELL Server

Hello,

I'm on a Linux blitz at the moment, to get a server I bought from my employer upa nd running.

I have a DLT drive in there, of unknown make - but it is a DELL server if that helps.

I've looked around and tried a few things with no success.

Can anyone point me or advise me as to how I can get this to work?

The first step in solving a problem is realizing that you have one. The problem is you need to know what hardware you are attempting to configure. Solve that and we can help you. Make and model numbers are good.

Thanks, but how do I get that without taking the thing apart?

The numbers are on the back of the device/server. The model numbers and brand are typically not on the inside of devices. That would be slightly not helpful.

I thought you meant the backup device, as I fully expect this to be a cheap and generic unit.

The server is a PowerEdge 1300, Model no MMP

Yast returns:

DLT1
Bus: SCSI
Class (spec): Tape
Class: Mass Storage Device
Device Numbers
Major: 9
Minor: 0
Range: 1
Type: c
Device name: /dev/st0
Device: DLT1
Driver: aic7xxx
Model: BNCHMARK DLT1
Old Unique Key: CFEB.p7_eaHNIyEA
Revision: 4022
Unique key: Er1e.JVpOcsU7unB
Vendor: BNCHMARK
bus_hwcfg: scsi
detail
channel: 0
host: 0
id: 0
lun: 0
dev_name2: /dev/sg0
dev_names
/dev/st0
sysfs_bus_id: 0:0:6:0

Hope this helps

Hi - I just signed up to this forum as I am having trouble with a tape drive too - ironicall, it seems to be exactly the same one! I am also trying to get it to work in Fedora Core 4 on my development server at work. I'm using a Poweredge 4400 (Dual Xeon PIII 1Ghz).

I've installed mt (I think I ran "yum install mt" as root).

Now, when I run "mt /dev/tape status" (or, in fact, try to run mt on /dev/st0, /dev/st, /dev/nst0, etc, etc) I get the following error "Input/Output Error".

dmesg contains the following:
scsi1 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 7.0
<Adaptec aic7880 Ultra SCSI adapter>
aic7880: Ultra Single Channel A, SCSI Id=7, 16/253 SCBs

Vendor: NEC Model: CD-ROM DRIVE:466 Rev: 1.06
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
target1:0:5: Beginning Domain Validation
target1:0:5: FAST-20 SCSI 20.0 MB/s ST (50 ns, offset 15)
target1:0:5: Domain Validation skipping write tests
target1:0:5: Ending Domain Validation
Vendor: BNCHMARK Model: DLT1 Rev: 3213
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
target1:0:6: Beginning Domain Validation
target1:0:6: FAST-10 SCSI 10.0 MB/s ST (100 ns, offset 15)
target1:0:6: Domain Validation skipping write tests
target1:0:6: Ending Domain Validation

and then later:
st 1:0:6:0: Attached scsi tape st0

/dev/tape is an automatically made symlink to /dev/st0.

All messages point towards linux knowing what the drive is - which is good. The light on the front says the tape is readable and ok. I've tried multiple tapes. They all produce the same error.
