Angry dlink dfm 560es - aargh..growl..

Hello there !
I am not able to setup an external modem ( dlink dfm 560es) by using wvdial /kppp. I am running rh 8, and i use a serial type mouse. when i try running wvdial i get the message that modem is not responding..( i set up the wvdial.conf file as per the manual page)

if i use kppp to query the modem it gives the message modem ready, all the 7 at commands are isssued but none of them give back a result.

I tried changing the deive to /dev/ttyS0.. i got the same message

i got this modem form a friend of mine. to test whether its worth buying an external modem.. but i find it more frustrationg than setting up an intenal modem All the 3 lights the 2 leftmost & 1 right most are lighted up as soon as i boot up the system ..then no thing else takes place. THe modem was workign fine under windows xp till i got it ! could u throw some light into the matter ?
