Distro's working on my notebook and not my desktop.why?

I got yesterday 3 live cd's:

1-the latest version of knoppix
2-latest version of slax
3-an old version of slax

All 3 worked very well on my thinkpad notebook which is divided into 3 partitions 2 of them are fat32 and one is ntfs which i installed windows on.On the other hand the HD on my desktop is abit old and only 1 partition which is fat32 and distro's 1&2 won't complete the loading phase.specially that in slax it keep finding errors in different sectors in the HD.so wht do you think i should do with this hard disk??Thanks

Try running diagnostics on the HD to check for bad sectors.

However I think it's strange that the liveCD's do not work, because they should work whether you have a hard drive or not.

BTW you can get free diagnostics software from the hard drive manufacturer's website.
