Distribution that works with Radeon 9250

I'm new to Linux, been running Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, love it. I set up a dual boot with XP on my desktop, but it's seemingly impossible to get my ATI Radeon 9250 working with any reasonable performance with later versions of Ubuntu (as several more experienced users have assured me).

Does anyone know of decently easy-to-use distributions that work out-of-the-box (or without dedicating more hours of work) with the Radeon 9250?

I've tried Ubuntu 9.10, 8.04, and OpenSUSe, latest version. No dice.

I don't know why any reasonably up-to-date distribution would have problems with a video card that has been supported by open source drivers for years now.

What exactly does "no dice" mean in regards to the distributions you've tried?
