This is from PCLinuxOS 2010.07 , /etc/X11/xorg.conf :
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen1"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultColorDepth 24
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "640x480" "480x360" "320x240"
EndSubsection
EndSection

Thanks for your help. I've checked in etc/X11/ and all the correct entries are in place by default:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1920x1080" "1600x900" "1366x768" "1360x765" "1280x720"
EndSubsection
EndSection
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "layout1"
Screen "screen1"
EndSection
The problem is I configure the screen resolution correctly from the settings offered but it isn't persistent and is lost on rebooting. I use other versions of Linux on the same screen without a problem (Mepis, Mint for example) so it seems to be a problem with KDE.
