display options

I have a 17 inch monitor that works very well but it has a 1 centimeter black border all around. Its been like that for a long time and works fine. Now i would like to change that. There must be a way to configure it better.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this properly configured?
I am using an AMD machine with a very ordinary screen VGA I think and Slackware 11.0 and XFCE with X11R6.
Phil!

It might be that you just need to use the controls on the monitor itself to "stretch" both the vertical and horizontal display. At least that used to work on my old CRT before I got a flat panel.

No. The black border is the limit of the display capability. Its like I was using a smaller monitor. I feel that X needs to be configured to recognise a 17 inch screen.

The software will not know if the screen is a millimeter in size or as a large as planet Jupiter. You will have to note the native resolution and use the gtf utility to create a modeline. Then add the modeline in the monitor section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config. Try to find pan or zoom controls on the monitor if it has them.

The contents of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf
contain a Monitor Section, a Graphic device section and a Screen section.
In the Monitor section the only line not commented out with a # is>
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "My Monitor"
<then>
HorizSync 31.5 – 50.0
<and later>
VertRefresh 40-90
EndSection
<The Screen section has>
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "VESA Framebuffer"
Monitor "My Monitor"

DefaultDepth 24
<and then>
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

EndSection
<.........................
My question is: Should this be modified? It seems as though my screen size 1024x768 is already noted.

Did you ever resolve this?

I have just put a new video card in. It all seems well, but I now have a black border. If I zoom on the monitor, it is all messed up when the windows pc is used on the same monitor.

it is an Nvidia 6200 card, and the resolution, monitor id etc look fine.
