Red face display/montor (re)syncs on every screen switch

Hello all,

I have a LCD monitor/display that works well, but whenever I boot, or switch
KDE session, or go shell and back CTRL-ALT-F1 / CTRL-ALT-F7, or the screen
saver kicks in, or go to KDE login screen, or turn the monitor off (physically)
... the monitor is shifted approx 2cm to the left.

The monitor starts a resync then (displays "Auto center - please wait").
When I'm quick enough to type in my screen saver password, or switch back to
the KDE session, the auto sync will correctly center the screen.
But in most cases, I have to hold the "AUTO" button on the monitor again
to cause another auto-center.

Now this is not a big problem, still it is annoying, and costs me a
handful of seconds whenever I feel like turning on the screen or switch
between my and my girlfriend's KDE session ;-)

I read in similar posts here that the monitor is supposed to remember the
correct setting. Well, mine doesn't. Is there anything in XFree config that
would probably effect the initial position on the screen ? So that the
monitor doesn't need to resync ?
I had that once with a SuSE 9.3 install out of the box.

BTW it's not the gfx card, because the machine and the install is brand new
(SUSE 10.2 out-of-the-box).

Thanks 'n Cheers, Tom.

Sounds to me like an issue with the horizontal and vertical sync values.
I have an AGP nvidia card, and have never played around with a built-in one, but I will offer a bunch of stuff here to help you get it figured out.
I did have the EXACT situation as you are having when I first set up my system: My desktop was fine when logged in, but the log-in screen was about 2cm to the left, and I was unable to max out my desktop resolution; it was limited to 1024x768 until I fixed the problem.
Backup your file before doing this stuff

You have got a tonne of modelines and weird resolutions in there. I would suggest (at least for testing purposes) commenting out all of the modelines (In fact, comment out the entire Modes Section).
Comment out the following:
UseModes "Modes[0]"
Option "Clone" "off" (it's the default; unneeded)
Option "Xinerama" "off" (ditto)
DisplaySize 340 270

Now, verify that you are using the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges for the monitor, per the user's manual or look it up online.
Change this server-layout line: Screen "Screen[0]" to Screen 0 "Screen[0]" 0 0
Finally, in the Screen section, in the Display subsection for the 24 color depth, remove all the extra modes EXCEPT 1280x1024.

Restart X and see how it works.
Best of luck, I hope this helps you. If it works, you can go ahead and add in the other resolutions you would like to use, but it may be a good idea to avoid the weird resolutions (like for example "1280x960" "1280x800")

Unhappy

Thank you, but all this did not change a bit :-(
The frequencies in the manual were slightly different,
but the new ones do show the same behaviour...

Any more ideas, anyone ?

Thanks, Cheers, Tom.

Long after having given up all hope on this, I installed the latest
nvidia drivers due to other problems, and now the resync is gone...

Great!

Cheers, Tom.
