Display freezes installing on Averatec laptop

X-posting after not drawing any responses in laptop forum:

I am installing Fedora 9 on an Averatec 3280, which is notorious for having display problems with Linux.

I am able to do a text-mode install which works but then the system boots to a text prompt.

I am able to install XWindows up to a point where the system fails to refresh the display, or respond to mouse or keyboard input. On earlier versions of Linux I had to fiddle with xorg.conf settings to get the screen sized properly.

But now I am stuck. So I want to know how I can put my hand into the install process to fix the screen and mouse params before the system freezes. I assume I would be editing xorg.conf at some point.

But I am not sure what to do.

Any assistance would be great.

12 inch LCD , AMD Sempron 2800+ processor, 1.6Ghz, 40GB hard drive, 256mb of physical memory (ram), DVD/RW drive, built-in 802.11g wireless, 10/100 ethernet connection and modem

Is that right? They don't seem to sell this laptop anymore...have you ran Linux on it? What distribution and version?

Do you still have the owner's manual for it? What are the details on the LCD and are you using a usb mouse with it or the touchpad?

You can try this: make a backup copy of your xorg configuration file naming it something like .backup, then delete the original xorg configuration file. Then try "startx". It that gives the same problem, then you would edit the xorg configuration file to have the right monitor settings for that LCD. Google to find some sample xorg files. It is usually in the /etc directory under X11.

If you try all that, and it still does not work, post your xorg configuration file.
