Better not take the risk. You don't want to lose all your data, do you?

I got the same smartmon message last year re an old 300 MB spinning rust drive and was guided by this community to buy and install a new drive. It turned out to be a lot easier than I had feared.

should i give up all hope? or can i save it?

You should back up your data immediately (as you should be all the time), and replace the disk. There's no saving it...disks die, period. This is on the way out and your single option is replacement. Better do it while you can and still have time to schedule things, rather than having to do it at 2 AM over a weekend.

Yes, get a new drive.

rclark 04-02-2024 10:48 AM

Disks are relatively cheap. Backup data, replace the drive, load new OS, and restore data. My 2 1/2 cents. No 5 cents with inflation...

Get the drive, and back up.

I know only too well the difficulty of predicting hardware failure. I'd be a multi-millionaire if I could have done it. So smartctl is saying "The disk is dead - but still somehow working."

At one time we used to be able to run a low level format to save some of them but now it's generally a toss em.

Thanks for the quick replies. The message went away yesterday and its not being used for anything super important. Ill accept the risk, continue to monitor, and backup often. I wanna see how long this thing'll go.
