disabling my DVD-ROM causes kernel panic

hi crew
i has just recently joined the gentoo clan and left debian behind.
i has a question regarding my dvd drive. i have a dvd drive installed and everything works fine but now i want to run linux without it. when i unplug it from the ide port and start up gentoo i get a kernel panic and i can't go any further.
is there something i can do at grub time to flag it or something?
can someone tell me what i have to do so that i can run linux without it. i am planning on making the drive accessable as a usb-case later.

Maybe check your bios and disable the dvd-rom there. It would probably show up as the secondary master.
