Disabling Laptop Touch Pad while External Mouse is available...

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 1640Z. When I use it at home, I hook up a cheap MS optical mouse, which works fine, the only problem now is, when I type, I tend to hit the mouse pad a bit with my palm and that makes me select where ever my mouse is pointing to.

Right now, the mouse pad and the USB mouse seem to be working off of the same xorg.conf device entry, but what configuration would I have to make to tell X that if an external mouse is present disable the mouse pad, otherwise use the mouse pad? I'm capable of programming or writing some start up scripts if that's what it comes to.

Thanks.

If you are using Synaptics touchpad, you can use the ksynaptics module from within control center. Ksynaptics can disable the touchpad while typing and re-enable it when you are not.

If the touchpad is not a synaptics, you can probably act the same idea i.e. disable it while typing ? I don't know how you can go about it though.
