direct rendering problem

I have an Ati Radeon graphic card and my OS is Ubuntu. After a few days of fighting I installed the right driver for this card (I suppouse) but I do not know how to make the Direct Rendering to work. The out put of the comand 'glxinfo' is direct rendering : no

If you can render your OpenGL apps at acceptable speeds, than glxinfo's report is irrelevant. I have an NVidia card, and although glxinfo tells me there is no direct rendering, all of my OpenGL apps are still incredably fast (they were extremely slow before I installed the nvidia drivers). Should be the same with ATI's, I think.
