Digital Monitor

Anyone have any suggestions on configuring X to drive a digital monitor? Installing Manny ppc on my 80 year-old Dads Mac sos's he can get a taste of linux -- basically I don't think it is a distro problem or related to anything but the monitor hardware-wise. Also tried Yellow Dog, with the exact same results. Just in case anyone has any specific experience with this setup tho, it is a G4 with the nvidia card and a 17inch lcd studio display (they make 2 models, one dig. one analog). I can use Fbdev as the driver and get 8 bit color max (yuck), but anything else I try gets me a blank screen and a requires reboot to get the machine responding again. Yellow dog has a specific kernel argument for this particular monitor to kick off the install -- no luck wit dat.

Thanks

Do you get a display with just a Linux prompt?
Or is the issue just with getting into X?

If you're just having trouble getting into X, then XF86Config may have some incorrect modes set. If you can't even get to a basic prompt, then that's more serious.

My VX900 is set up digital, and there isn't anything special in my XF86Config file for it.

Of course it does say something about "Digital Display Input" in my /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Hope it helps.

No display whatsoever using the drivers that automatically install for the nvidia card. Screen flickers and then goes black and machine freezes (to all appearances, although it may not actually be locked up). I'll check on the dig display input thing...those monitors don't take horizontal and vertical frequency inputs I don't think, just a digital signal. That, plus it has some fancy shmancy Mac usb connection. Wish I could have the machine in front of me to experiment when I get ideas, but I have to travel to it. Everyone in my family loves macs but me...no offence to mac users (as that is who may be able to answer my question --have pity on my aged dad!), but I can't see spending $3500.00 on a 933mhz system . He put 1.5 gig of memory in the thing too..Jesus, Dad, take me along next time you buy a comp!!! But, oh, well, the man wouldn't take an 1800XP system when I offered to just give it to him with linux installed -- wants it on his beloved Mac.

Did you try ctrl-alt-backspace three fingure salute when the screen freezes? This will crash the X server so you can continue working, if it is a X server problem. Second things that comes to mind is NVidia drivers. Did you try normal x free's nv driver instead? Try to get it to work with that first, then install the newest nvidia drivers, since the older ones have some bugs that cause the exact thing that is happening to you.
not much help.. but i hope you get it to work.

Yuppers, cntrl-alt-bkspc has no effect. The nv driver gits me the black screen....I can get to the command line through rescue to work with the Xfree file though if I need to.
Thanks for the response tho, any help is greatly appriciated.

I have a digital LCD flat panel and couldn't get the VNidia drivers to work. I'm now using the standard XFree4 vesa driver and the generic 1024x768 flat panel display setting. It seems to work just fine, except a bit slower than when I run windows.
