Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Digital Camera Recommendation?

Good Morning All,

I've just had a pleasant surprise - tax rebate - and thought I'd spend some on a digital camera (budget up to ~£150). Having tried a few friends' cameras, I do like the Kodak CX 7330, but looking at the forums here there seem to be a few problems with Kodak cameras.

I've actually tried an Olympus with the PC, and it was easy to transfer the files (must be if I can do it!), but I thought the camera wasn't as east to use as the Kodak, and the picture quality wasn't as good. By the way we've one PC on FC1 and one on FC3.

So, can anyone confirm that there is a reasonably easy way to transfer files from a Kodak camera please, or suggest an alternative within the budget? Thanks for any input.

I've got an old Nikon Coolpix 200 and love the picture quality. It's got lower resolution (2 mega pixels) but the color and contrast is better than most. I've played with later Nikon models and the picture quality is still great.

For transfers, any "decent" camera with a removable memory card allows use of a flash card reader which is supported by Linux in general. This allows you to focus on which camera you want, not the one you can get to work.

If you haven't already taken a look, the LQ HCL may be of interest. It includes a section on cameras -- J.W.

Thanks for the suggestions folks - I'm ordering the Kodak; it has a removable card, so if it comes to the worst I can use a reader as suggested.

J.W. - thanks for the link to the hardware files; something I've not looked at before. When I've got the camera sorted I'll add to it.

Thanks again - KevP.

You're welcome, and thanks in advance for volunteering to add your camera to it once you've got it figured out. Along those lines I'd encourage everyone to add an entry for any equipment not already in the HCL, or to add a review for equipment you're using that's already in the HCL. The more feedback and information there is for each device, the more useful the HCL will be for all users. -- J.W.
