Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Digital Camera Advice

Hi, I'm looking to get a proper digital camera and I've recently switched to Ubuntu. Is there anything I should avoid when shopping? Are there particular brands that give lots of trouble? Should there be some standard I look for on the box or manual that if I see it I know it will work with Linux, or not?

Your advice is wholly appreciated.

The standard interface is gtkam. Install that, and look at the list of supported cameras.

Any camera that is USB Mass Storage Device compliant will work without drivers.

I've experienced that at least some Hewlett-Packard cameras that have videos in the memory/card when trying to load pictures from the camera tend to lock up the application that's loading the pictures. I'm not sure if this is a gtkam problem or HP camera problem or what, and don't care that much since the cameras I currently have are unable to take good quality videos..but just to inform. I did not have any problems before but nowadays do, so it might be something with the software.
