Difference between "1R8 Single Rank 240 Pin" and "2R8 dual Rank 240 Pin"

Need new memory but this confuses me.

How do I tell what I have in place so I match it.

You can get info about the memory modules by doing

dmidecode -t memory
Although mine say "Rank: Unknown". It is up to the Manufacturer whether they programmed this info into the module.

1R8 is single sided, 2R8 is double sided. Depending on chipset, may or may not make any difference.

lshw may pop out some data on RAM. It is the only thing i know how to read timings and such
