Difference between "1R8 Single Rank 240 Pin" and "2R8 dual Rank 240 Pin"

Need new memory but this confuses me.

How do I tell what I have in place so I match it.

Looking at these:

You can get info about the memory modules by doing

Code:
dmidecode -t memory
Although mine say "Rank: Unknown". It is up to the Manufacturer whether they programmed this info into the module.

1R8 is single sided, 2R8 is double sided. Depending on chipset, may or may not make any difference.
