Diagnosis of Damaged Drive

I have a linux drive and was usiing an ext3 formated drive as a seoncdary drive and now it won't mount saying it is not a valid block device.

What command(s) can I use to determine if the drive is dead or can get any data off of it?

Thanks in Advance.
