device not accepting address 16 error 71

Running Ubuntu 7.04 on Lenovo 3000 N100 dual boot with WinXP SP2.

My external Maxtor HD has always worked fine in the past when I plugged the USB cable in. In fact, it automounted. Now it's not being recognized. My USB mouse works fine. The Maxtor HDD problem is there whether or not I boot with the mouse usb plugged in. The HD works fine when I plug it into a windows box. I'm getting this error message, which seems to have appeared often on different forums without anyone giving an answer. System> Preferences > removable drives and media shows the mount and browse commands properly checked.

eric@lenovo-1:~$ dmesg | tail

Thanks.

working now

It's working now. I tried torquing the external HDD a bit and that seemed to wake it up. So not a problem with the Linux system. Leaves me wondering why it seemed to work on Windows yesterday but not on Linux. Some things we'll never know.

Thanks anyway.

checked cable?

I had the same problem. When I used a different USB cable, it worked.
