"/dev/sda1 is not a valid block device" used to be

Ok so I've got an issue with my mp3 player, I've tried mounting it and i get the following:

Code:

mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
I'm not sure why this is but after removing and adding new songs this started and its unaccessable on both my computer and my laptop *and even the windoze machine on the other side of the house* I dunno if this will help but heres my dmesg readout:

Anyone have any ideas?

(o one more thing I even tried fdisk on it to see if I could just clear it and get access to it again heres what comes up:
Code:

fdisk /dev/sda

Unable to read /dev/sda

It might just be shot but it might not be its a rca lyra if its shot I'll just have to buy a new one but if its something I'm doing or if its fixable well.. would like to save that money.

some mp3 players need to be formtted using a program that comes with them
if thats not the case then it looks like it is hosed

The drive doesn't seem a happy bunny. When you reading + writing new tracks, was this under Linux or Windows, and had you simply unplugged the drive, or unmounted/disconnected via Windows USB devices correctly?

millionknives 12-13-2005 06:00 AM

Under linux I avoid using the windoze machine it has to many issues. as for the unmounting I may have not unmounted now that I think about it which would be the error on my part causing the whole error.

JPregnier 12-13-2005 02:47 PM

This maybe the result of the new "hotplug" behaviour in kernel 2.6.xx
1.- check to see if /dev/sda1 exist, if not:
I suggest you check /dev/.static/dev/ (as root)and see if sda1 is there.
If it is (should be if 1.- is wrong)then create a symbolic link to tell your fstab where to find it.
Hope to help

There could be problems with assigning the correct device as mentioned by the previous poster, however the errors reported seem more of an indication of sector errors, probably caused by it simply being removed from the machine without it being correctly unmounted. You could follow an earlier suggestion of formatting the drive and seeing if that corrects the problems, or depending on the filesystem you could try checking it for errors and repairing them.

Really? What sort of problem?
Thank you
