/dev/dsp


Hi,
I want to know who creates /dev/dsp?? On one computer i get one entry in /dev/ and on other i got 2 for /dev/dsp0 and /dev/dsp1.

Depends what kernel version you are using. If you are using 2.4.x kernel, it uses devfsd to create the device nodes. If you are using 2.6.x kernel it can use use either devfsd or udev. Assuming your system is using udev, /dev/dsp is usually a symbolic link that points to either /dev/dsp0...255 depending on dsp_map option that is given to snd-pcm-oss. Normally snd-pcm-oss defaults to 0 or /dev/dsp0. /dev/dsp0 is your first sound device. /dev/dsp1 is your second sound device.

hi,
but on my 2.6 kernel RHEL4 i have only one /dev/dsp which is not pointing to anywhere else

hi,
just i saw whether /dev/dsp is in use or not and found /dev/dsp is not being in use while playing mp3's in xmms. so whats use of /dev/dsp??
