/dev/cdrom is write-protected

How can this happen. I am root. I am trying to install vmware tools. I run the following command:
/mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
and I get the following message:
mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read only

What's UP?

ok

You're right. BUt, if it's so apparent, why does Linux indicate that?

Probably the options in /etc/fstab mount it as read-write

VMware tools comes from an ISO image. You can not add any more files to this file. If you type 'mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop [path]/vmware/workstation/lib/isoimages/linux.iso /mnt/cdrom', you will not get the message "mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read only".

For physical CD/DVD discs, I include ro in /etc/fstab.

Nothing actually. Nothing is wrong here. You can access /mnt can't you? And it displays all the files?

Everything seems to be going as its suppose to here.

Linux is in the habit of giving you verbose information. Even if it seems apparent. Conversely you will find that this is better than the alternative. Too little information.
