Usually I just remember which one I installed.

However, since you don't say what version/distro of Linux, what kind of printer, attached how...can't tell you much. You can try to go into CUPS (if you're using it) and look at your print queues. Under openSUSE, I can run yast and look there, and I'm sure there are similar control panels for other versions of Linux. Again, no details to even guess.

You did not ask for a command line way...your question was "How do I determine which driver is installed for printer." Again, without details or a clear question, there isn't much folks can tell you. The lpinfo and lpadmin commands can be used; their man pages can give you more info about the switches. You can also look in the /etc/cups/ppd folder for the installed drivers to check versions when you find out which one you're using.

The HPLIP program can also tell you things about the driver.

This can be used to enumerate model and filter (driver) for configured printers...
Code:
egrep -i "name|model|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*

Not sure which line is specifically the driver.

Guessing it uses driver for HP Officejet Pro 6830 E-all-in-one eventhough it is a 6970

Installed on this computer 2 years ago.

Just installed on the Macbook running same Linux. I can print but not scan with. Noticed that it wanted the 6830 driver so wanted to see if that was different from the one on the first computer (Dell)

$ sudo egrep -i "HP|6970|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*

Did you look at the file names?? Bolded one of them for emphasis...it specifically says "HP-OfficeJet-Pro-6970.ppd"....which is the driver. And have you looked at the lpadmin or lpinfo commands? Gone through CUPS web interface?? Why is it so important to do this through the command line??

So this isn't about your printer driver, but essentially a continuation of your other thread, asking about scanning:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...le-4175685687/

Follow up there with the output of the commands you were asked to run. And why install an old version of Mint on a new system? Mint 18 is end-of-life/unsupported in April 2021. Mint 20 is the latest. If you're having a problem scanning, don't open separate threads for the same issue with different wording.

You also don't tell us details, such as what actually 'wanted' the driver, how you're trying to scan, how the printer is hooked up, etc. Again...unless you provide details and ask a clear question, there isn't much we can help with.

The output does confirm that you've configured CUPS to use the HPLIP driver (with respect to the HP-OfficeJet-Pro-6970 printer). As TBOne has mentioned keep your discussion in one place. Multiple threads like this just fragment and confuse such issues.

It has been mentioned numerous times that if using an HP printer and hplip then the hplip-plugin is required to use the scanner.

Too bad they forgot to mention that in the booklet that came with the scanner. 2 days ago I found where to download the HP setup. It was pretty good. Had links specific to many Linux distros. I could print and scan from the first computer just fine, but got error messages during the process. The prints and scans worked well and I decided to let sleeping dogs lie. When I started using the second computer I could not scan. I decided to remove the printer from the 2nd computer and reinstalled with the HP setup. Everything is fine now. No error messages. Will probably do the same with the first computer.

My previous printer/scanners were HP with wireless that I ran on my LAN. Never had problems setting them up. They were pre USB models. That might have been why I did not have to do anything special.

Anyway, the reason I asked was that I wanted to know how to determine what driver is being used to run a printer.

A simple way is to look in the CUPS interface: http://localhost:631/printers

On Mint there is a LM in a circle symbol, bottom left hand corner - see image.
A pop up menu will magically appear and you can type 'hp' into the search box as indicated by a magnifying glass.

Not on my Desktop. I am running 18.0 Cinnamon. I see that there is a search box at the top of the Menu. Never used it before. I typed hp in it and the HP Device Manager came up. Not much there.
