Desktop bigger than screen, I don't like that.

How do I make my desktop the same size as my screen resolution. My screen's turned up as high as it can go (1024X768) but Mandrake 9.2 insists on making my desktop 1600X1200. Having to move around on my desktop to see the whole thing to me is very awkward, so I want to set my desktop area to 1024X768, same as my screen resolution. How do I do that?

It looks like Mandrake insists your monitor can handle 1600x1200, but the settings are not correct. Look into your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and and find 'Section "Screen"'. Below, you shuld have a number of 'Subsection "Display"'. In every such subsection there should be line "Mode". In every such line you probably have "1600x1200". If you hav them, remove all "1600x1200"s. Save the file and restat X. Your resolution should be OK.

Strangely, going to 800X600 seems to work, though I'm actually running 1024X768 now. I guess I had to use the "step up" bug to fool it into running my desired video mode.

if you have multiple resolutions set in your x config

you should be able to press

ctrl_alt_+ (plus) and ctrl_alt_minus to switch modes.
