Deskjet 3550 "prints" blank pages

My deskjet 3550 (which works fine under windows) goes through all the motions and looks like it's printing, but no ink ever gets put onto the page. I've made sure the black cartridge is selected (the color one is empty) and I'm using hpijs cos it came up automatically when I installed the printer. It doesn't even print a test page, and the same problem happens with every application, not just OO writer.

I'm using Ubuntu kernel 2.6.12-10-386

Surely someone has an idea? can I maybe use a different driver? if so how do I do that?

Some people have this printer working with linux, others not so happy.
