Dell XPS 13 9350 -> Dell Docking Station D3100 fails to support external monitors

The promo really caught my imagination: a Dell XPS 13 user working with three monitors through a Dell docking station. And bless me, the XPS comes with Linux!

I really stretched my budget and bought the whole package (less monitors).

But... I can't get the docking station to connect to a single monitor; much less three.

Two Dell techs spent considerable time trying to solve the problem. The first finally kicked it up to the second. He also spent considerable time. But here's the result:

"I appreciate your usage here and want to see the 9350 work with 16.04+dock.

"I do suspect it is a software configuration issue as a number of persons have reported successful setup with this configuration. Currently I do not have the bandwidth to personally configure this setup outside of OEM support and pursue the testing required to file bug reports or provide the solution."

So, I have a $100 brick and, for my part, I don't have a clue.

Are there any Linux gurus in the house who have seen success with this set-up and can point the way? Or who might have ideas of how to diagnose and solve the problem?

My hats off to the techs. They genuinely worked hard to bring success. But I'm not confident that Dell has their back.

Many thanks,

Try a livecd like Knoppix, just boot from the cd and see if they are detected. Chances are if not then it's not going to be an easy config fix.

What does Dell say about this docking station? Did you contacted suppport?
You would need some dedicated USB drivers for display etc. I tried once something like this on Windows but driver support was a mess (worked on one computer but not on another).
BTW the proprietary Dell docks work on any OS very well but those are available only for some Latitudes/Precision 3510 (possibly 3520?).
