Hi all, I've seen several postings concerning laptops that won't wake up. I have a desktop that won't wake up though.
Wether I use a screensaver or not, it seems like my PC will not wake up after it hibernates after a certain period of time. Most of the time it seems like it's Ok overnight. But if I leave it for more than a whole day it just stops responding all together.
I can get a warning on the screen that it's in Power Save mode and to move the mouse or use the keyboard to wake it up. Problem is, the keyboard and mouse have no effect. As if they're disabled.
Now we just bought two new PCs from Dell to try out at work. We're having the same problem with them. When the developers come in to work in the morning, the machines wake up. However, on Monday mornings after not using them all weekend, they just won't wake up and we have to do a hard reset.
All 3 PCs, mine at home and the 2 new ones here, are patched with all the latest updates including the kernel.
I've hunted the Net far and wide but so far haven't found anything decisive on why they won't wake up.
I have an idea... may sound blunt, but it is the truth.
DON'T HIBERNATE. Hibernation and "sleeping" are REALLY bad for your tower, especially over longer periods of time. If you are going to leave your computer for a few hours or a day or two, and you don't need it to stay on, why not turn it off?(Which hibernation is functionally off, you get no benefit... no internet continues, no installation progesses, your computer stops what it is doing mid process and idles the engine as it were.)
Just turn it off, for the good of your hardware.
Now, assuming you want it on the whole time... then leave it on, really on. Or if you have the option use the processor(and other hardwares) automatic powersave. All current processors from AMD and Intel have their own power saving features, which are usually bios enabled through ACPI settings. If you want to save power, do that. Otherwise, to "fix" your issue, it is probably ACPI issues anywho.
The problem is, I CAN'T turn off the power functions. In the BIOS I have a choice of either S1 or S3 settings. There is no Off setting.
Additionally, my PC happens to also be the Samba server for Print and File services. I also run eDonkey which can sometimes take a while to finish downloading what I'm looking for. Therefore, I can't just shut it off.

How does Samba run through hibernation? Just curious...
Here are a couple of things to try, it may take some reading and various options switching, but apaprently, the BIOS side can be over ridden kernel side.(I had never really tried that myself). http://tuxmobil.org/apm_linux.html
Thoughts range from "force no acpi" in kernel, to disabling in recompiled kernels, or using very specific options.
I also see vague references to most dell motherboards have bios updates available, have you tried that?
I needed to go into Yast and used the run level editor to turn off acpi. That seems to do the trick.
BTW, Samba does continue to allow connections and access to shares but the box just wouldn't wake up from either the keyboard or mouse. Strange I know but those were the symptoms.
