Dell Scanner not working

Hi,

I purchased a DELL E515DW multifunction machine last week. I have connected the machine to my wireless network, downloaded the printer driver from DELL website, install google cups printer driver and now I am able to print wirelessly from my home desktop running on Mageia 5. I am also able to print anything from my mobile using google cloud print option.

However, I am not able to use the scanner with my Mageia linux. SANE doesn't seem to support my AIO machine. Running the command "scanimage -L" does not give any fruitful output. However, running the command sane-find-scanner as root is showing the printer with the vendor id and product id. Is it possible to configure the scanner in my linux (Mageia)?

If it is not possible to use the scanner in traditional way, what are the other options. The DELL E515DW seems to support "Scan to FTP", but the user guide doesn't list any procedure to make it working. I am thinking of setting up a FTP server in my mageia linux, and then use the "Scan to FTP" option from the AIO machine. Is there a detailed procedure somewhere on the net on how to get this setup?

Thanks,
Balaji.

How are you connecting the device to your network e.g. directly to a router, on a Windows box, on another linux box etc?

To get you pointed in the right direction, here's a couple articles on sharing a scanner connected directly on a linux box over a network:

Thanks for your response.

Currently, it is connected wirelessly to my netgear router. I have configured the network settings using the MENU button on the AIO machine. The machine is able to scan all available wireless networks and once I select my SSID, I was able to enter my WPA2 password and the machine is connected to the network.

I can connect the machine to my Mageia box using a USB or ethernet cable if it is required to use the scanner functionality of the AIO machine.

Thanks,
Balaji.

I looked at the links you have provided. As I mentioned in my original post, SANE doesn't seem to support the DELL E515DW machine. Will these procedures still work?

Thanks,
Balaji.

I would hook the device directly to your Mageia box via usb and see if you can get it working there. I suspect that you will be able to. If that is the case, then you are looking at network configuration issues with respect to using the scanner over a network. I haven't reviewed the articles in detail but they both appear to require configuration on both the server side(router) and the client side. There may also be firewall issues at the router. If you can use the scanner with windows but not linux when the scanner is connected to the router, then it may just be necessary to configure your Mageia box properly. If the scanner doesn't work with windows when the printer is connected to the router, it will be an issue with the router.

When I connected my AIO machine using USB, Mageia did not recognize it. As I mentioned earlier, "scanimage -L" did not give any output. Running "sane-find-scanner" did not find anything when I run this command as a normal user. If I run the command "sudo sane-find-scanner", the AIO machine connected to USB is recognized. However, I could not get it to work as this model is not supported by SANE.

Thanks,
Balaji.

Having same issue with Ubuntu 14.04, print only using Ubuntu 12 drivers from dell. Was only able to connect and use ADF Scan through Mac, so this isn't a router issue.

@pnbalaji any progress?

Thank you,
Seek
