Dell SB Live! [value] sound card, Mandrake 10.1, ALSA 1.0.7, playback problems

Some background on the card and problem:

This is a Creative Sound Blaster Live! card that came with a Dell Dimension desktop.
This card is NOT a regular Creative Sound Blaster Live card.
The chipset used in this card is different from the regular one which is/was supported under the snd-emu10k1 module under ALSA. The SB Live Value card (this is what the Dell version of the card is sometimes referred to as) has recently become supported under ALSA 1.0.6 under the snd-emu10k1x module.

I had this card working under Mandrake 10 Official Download edition. This necessitated compiling a kernel without either OSS or ALSA support and building ALSA from source. To do this I followed the ALSA quickstart guide available at http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=Quick+Install [see notes below on exact build arguments].

Under Mandrake 10.1 Official Download Edition this method did not work, although sound will play it has a distorted and "warbly" sound to it. This is true of files played from my native hard drive and the internet. This is also true whether I used either ALSA version 1.0.6 or 1.0.7 .

As for arguments used for building ALSA from source I used this guide http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=Quick+Install. The only deviation from this was when building alsa-driver-1.0.7 I used the argument ./configure --with-cards=emu10k1x --with-isapnp=no --with-sequencer=yes , this was to include my particular soundcard in the build process, and to account for not having any ISA devices.

I have followed this procedure on my default 2.6.8.1-12mdk kernel, a modified 2.6.8.1-12mdk kernel [left out all OSS and ALSA], and also with a 2.6.10 kernel again leaving out all OSS and ALSA. All of these resulted in the same "warbly" sounding playback of all audio files. I have tried turning on and off artsd with no change/improvement. Also I have tried playback under Gnome with the same "warbly" results [all previous testing was done under KDE].

Furthermore I have tried compiling each of the above mentioned kernels with various and/or all parts of OSS and ALSA being included with the same "warbly" problems.

I've run alsaconf [you can see it's changes to my modprobe.conf] and alsamixer and double checked all volume/mixer settings along with changing them all with no positive effect.

When I went from Mandrake 10 to 10.1 I did a completely new install not an upgrade.

At this point I feel like this must be a Mandrake 10.1 problem in that it some how differs from 10 in how in handles playback under my card. Maybe a simple config change even.

Some background on the misbehaving machine:

Well I changed the Amarok audio engine to xine and all is well.

To do this from the Amarok playlist screen choose Settings ----> Configure Amarok -----> Engine -----> change the engine to xine or your desired audio engine.

Hopefully posting this solution will help anyone else with this problem and will cut down on the number of zero reply threads.

Enjoy!
